A horse paddock blacksmith ensures that horses entering a paddock for racing are properly shod. They also perform other tasks, such as removing worn shoes, examining hooves, and selecting new shoes.
Responsibilities:
• Inspect shoes: Ensure that all shoes comply with HISA regulations.
• Inspect hooves: Examine hooves for cracks, bruises, and other damage.
• Replace shoes: Remove worn or defective shoes and replace them with new ones.
• Attention to detail: Pay close attention to detail when examining hooves and selecting shoes.
• Communication skills: Interact with horse trainers and other staff members.
• Teamwork: Work well in a fast-paced team environment.
• Judgment: Make decisions and use sound judgment.

Job Specifications:
• Up to two years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• General to advanced knowledge of the horse racing industry.
• General knowledge of horse racing rules and regulations.
• Advanced attention to detail.
• General communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are required to interact effectively with all levels of staff and horse trainers.
• General ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
• Displays willingness to make decisions.
• Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.
• Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
• Monitors own work to ensure quality.
• Observes safety and security procedures.
• Follows instructions, responds to management direction.
• Must be able to pass IRB licensing requirements.
