Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Iowa is accepting applications and resumes for our Thoroughbred Racing Secretary position. The Thoroughbred Racing Secretary will help supervise and direct the Racing Office Dept. during our live racing season and work with Racing Administration staff during the non-live racing season in planning and developing the Thoroughbred racing program overall. The 2025 live racing season with 80 total race days begins on May 9 with 20 days of Thoroughbred only racing followed by 60 days of mixed Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing beginning June 15 and ending on September 27.
The Thoroughbred Racing Secretary will be responsible for and expected to do the following:
- Manage the live racing season by writing and implementing the condition book for Thoroughbred owners and trainers.
- Reviewing stall applications and allocating stalls to effectively fill available stall space for Thoroughbreds.
- Recruiting horse stables that will participate and blend in well with the racing program offered.
- Work with Racing Administration, Iowa HBPA and I.T.B.O.A. to develop a purse, state bred supplement and stakes schedule for open and Iowa-bred horses.
- Collaborate with various internal departments when dealing with live racing related issues.
- Analyze and process workout and past performance records on all horses in order to offer races that feature horses of similar experience, class, ability and adequate field size for the wagering public.
- Help assist Racing Administration staff in the hiring of Racing Officials that are well qualified and adhere to all procedures, policies and regulations.
- Able to work weekends, holidays and varying hours.
- Be proficient in basic computer skills and have experience using the InCompass Solutions Track Manager system.
- Have knowledge of the horse racing industry, state and federal rules and regulations, race day operations and perform the job with integrity, dedication and strong work ethic.
- Perform other duties as assigned and have regular and reliable attendance.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
- Primarily indoor environment with minimal traveling required.
- Light physical demands, must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
Education / Experience / Qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in the racing industry as a Racing Secretary or Assistant Racing Secretary.
- Must be able to attain an Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission license.
- Thorough understanding of horse racing industry, ability to plan races well in advance to gain maximum usage of those horses stabled on site, must be well networked throughout the industry to recruit personnel and horsemen to the facility.
- Ability to communicate and interact verbally and in writing with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Maintains and provides the highest level of guest service for our external and internal guests by promoting the use of our "JACKPOT" guest service training.
